SQA Participates in Continent to Continent Comparison of Regional Qualification Frameworks
On 19 November 2024, the Seychelles Qualifications Authority (SQA) proudly participated in a ground-breaking webinar comparing the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the Southern African Development Community Qualifications Framework (SADCQF). This historic exercise is the first time two regional qualifications frameworks have undergone such a formal comparison, marking a major step towards global education harmonisation.
Leading this momentous occasion were Eduarda Castel-Branco, a technical expert from the European Training Foundation and Tiina Polo, a representative of the European Commission. SQA’s CEO, Fiona Ernesta, who was chosen to be the representative of SADC Member States, was also part of the presenter’s panel.
Why Does This Matter?
For learners, educators, and employers alike, this comparability exercise provides a foundation for easier recognition of qualifications across regions. Imagine a world where a Seychellois learner could seamlessly transfer credits to pursue further studies in Europe or where an African professional’s skills are easily recognised globally. This initiative sets the stage for that future by building trust and aligning principles, practices, and standards between regional frameworks.
Key Findings
The exercise revealed that the EQF and SADCQF are highly comparable, with only minor, non-substantial differences. Both frameworks share goals of fostering quality assurance, promoting lifelong learning, and recognising all forms of learning—formal, non-formal, and informal. Importantly, the SADCQF emphasises harmonisation within the SADC region while respecting national autonomy, reflecting its unique regional context.
A Step Toward Global Opportunities
This comparability not only benefits individuals but also strengthens relationships between countries, enabling smoother academic and professional mobility. It highlights the importance of mutual learning and cooperation in a globalised world where skills, qualifications, and talent are increasingly mobile.
Seychelles on the Global Stage
For Seychelles, this milestone underscores our nation’s active role in shaping global education systems. Ms. Ernesta’s participation as a key presenter positions Seychelles as a significant contributor to this global conversation. Her leadership and insights reflect the SQA’s commitment to ensuring that qualifications from Seychelles are both credible and globally recognised.
What’s Next?
The findings of this comparability exercise will pave the way for deeper integration between qualifications frameworks worldwide, inspiring similar efforts in other regions.
Stakeholders are encouraged to join the conversation and explore how this initiative could impact education and workforce development in Seychelles and beyond.
